      A reliable nut color sorter manufacturer should be able to prove three things before asking you to buy: that your actual material can be separated, that the proposed machine fits your production line, and that technical support will still be available after installation. A long feature list or a high headline accuracy does not answer any of those questions on its own.

      Nuts are not one sorting application. Walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios, almonds, cashews, peanuts and macadamias differ in size, shape, fragility and surface characteristics. In-shell nuts, kernels and shell-kernel mixtures also require different decisions. The supplier must understand the product entering the machine and the grades you need at the outlet before recommending a configuration.

      Start with Your Finished Product, Not the Machine Catalogue

      A processor looking for cleaner hazelnut kernels has a different problem from a pistachio plant separating open and closed shells. A walnut packer may need several kernel color grades, while a pecan line may be more concerned with shell pieces remaining after cracking. Calling all four jobs “nut color sorting” hides the information needed for a sound buying decision.

      Before contacting a manufacturer, prepare samples for every required output: accepted product, each saleable grade, definite rejects and borderline pieces. Record the normal incoming defect ratio, the throughput needed during a working shift and the number of passes currently used. This gives the supplier a real specification instead of a list of general wishes.

      1. Ask the Manufacturer to Test Normal Production Material

      A sample test is the fastest way to move from a sales claim to evidence. The test batch should represent normal production and include difficult defects—not only clean product mixed with a few obvious dark pieces. If operators disagree about certain nuts, include those boundary samples as well.

      The test should produce two or more physical streams that you can inspect. Check what remains in the accepted product and how much good material appears in the reject stream. If several commercial grades are required, review each outlet separately. Ask the supplier to keep the recipe stable while recording the feed rate, because product cleanliness, recovery and throughput must be evaluated together.

      Some jobs need another sensing route. Shell fragments and kernels may look similar in visible light, so infrared recognition can add useful information for shell-kernel separation. If the target is an internal condition inside an intact shell and it produces no reliable exterior signal, an ordinary color sorter should not be presented as the answer; the manufacturer should evaluate whether X-ray inspection is appropriate.

      This is a revealing supplier test. A dependable manufacturer explains what the proposed system can observe, where its limits are and why a particular chute, belt, multi-view, infrared or X-ray configuration fits the sample. A supplier that recommends the same machine for every nut and every defect has not yet defined the application.

      3. Make Capacity Part of the Sorting Result

      Capacity should be stated for a defined material and quality target. Kernel size, moisture, incoming defect concentration, feed uniformity, recipe strictness and the number of passes can all affect working output. A maximum feed figure without those conditions is not enough to size a production line.

      Give the nut sorting machine supplier your required finished output per hour or per shift, seasonal peak, available operating hours and expected product changes. Then ask for the test result at a feed rate that keeps the agreed accepted-product standard and acceptable good-product carryover. This makes it possible to compare two proposals on the same basis.
